What are websites and how are they used?

The point of a website for musicians is that it is a centre point of all social medias. Platforms like twitter and instagram come and go, but a website is a staple option which is essential for any new musician. It holds all of their album info, tour dates and merchandise which is a key factor to grow a fan base. A homepage allows you to have your own branding and give you control over your image and not allowing a third party component doing this for you. It needs to show the star off with a logo or a huge picture of the star as you enter the site so you know your looking at their website and not anyone else's. A website also gives your image a sense of professionalism as if you were an amateur artist you would not have a website yet.

A website needs to have all the stars social medias linked on the homepage in order for younger generations to get in touch with the star through twitter etc. The homepage must be quite simple with a picture of the star to boldly suggest that its their website. Tour dates must be linked very closely to the top of the homepage, because this is a key element to the promotion of the star. Merchandise is also very important because it is essentially free advertisement from your fans as they are wearing your personally designed clothing as a fandom.

"It’s important for artists to have a website dedicated specifically to them. Personally, I promote an average of more than one show a day for our venue, so if I am sending out a newsletter to 25,000 people and I want to feature your act by including a video and you don’t have a website that makes it easy for me, I am going to have to move on to the next artist." - Courtney Gallagher of Club Passim

Miley Cyrus

The target audience for Miley Cyrus is teenage girls aged around 15 - 20. I also think that many teenage boys like her too because she is very attractive. Teenage girls will be attracted to this type of website because it is very girly, it has hand written writing for her title and a landscape picture of her lying on the floor looking provocative. The colour scheme of her website is also very cool toned with whites and greens suggesting innocence as she has changed as an artist in recent times. The conventions they've used symbolically is stereotypical as they have linked all the pictures on her website to her most recent song called 'Malibu'. As the song's title is a location name, the pictures on the website are focused on a more naive theme as it is a bright, sunny place in LA. They have also used typical technical conventions like all the links to all music platforms to find her song and her most recent music video in the top right hand corner. The overall message she's sending is a positive one as she is showing how she has changed from a rebellious teenager into a young woman. It is creating a star image because it is a quite feminine, girly and country orientated look and feel to the website. However she is quite sexualised in this image but also spreading body positivity because she looks/feels comfortable in this picture.

Mura Masa

The target audience for Mura Masa is late teens to young adults from around 16-25. Mura Masa produces dance/electronic music that usually consists of just instrumentals. Very design orientated people would be attracted to this type of website because it is set up so well, the pictures move around the page as you scroll down and their are GIF's of him with in a concert which makes the page look x10 times better because you know he is a popular enough artist to have a concert. The website starts off with the view of their most recent video called 'All Around the World' featuring Desiigner. This is a convention of a musician's website because it is instant promotion for the artist's music video, which they need for target audiences to be reached. They have used the stereotypical technical convention of their music being displayed as the first thing you see and his social medias put at the bottom of the screen, clearly seen for people to get in touch with the artist. However, they do not have any other links to their website except for their music and tour dates, they do not have a merchandise site which is quite surprising because he is a successful artist. The website is generally easy to use and laid out in a unique way. The site is trying to express itself in not a image orientated way, there are limited images of the actual artist himself, this is obvious from his stage name 'Mura Masa' too. The ideology is that it just has a text and pictures to symbolise the artist. It is very photography based with few pictures of himself and including pictures of his actors from some of his music videos, which may cause confusion to viewers of the website as you do not know who the person is who creates the music. It has created a star image by putting a simplistic label on Mura Masa himself and people have to discover who he is through his music, not his image.

Comparing the two websites:

Differences:
  • the fonts are different as hers is its handwritten and girly and his is bold and in capital letters
  • she has a merchandise site, he doesn't.
  • her website is more simplified, it is easy to guide your way through the site, his is quite ambigious.
  • target audiences for Miley is much younger than Mura Masa.
  • layout is very basic for Miley, she has her tour dates on the same page as her homepage and Mura Masa has his on a separate webpage through a link on the homepage.
  • his colour scheme is very monotoned and faded colours, and she has greens and bright colours like the balloons at the bottom of her page.
  • Miley is the centre of attention in her website, and in Mura Masa's you have to scroll down to see what he looks like.
  • scrolling down Mura Masa's website it is very interactive and not static, but Miley just has two landscape pictures from her most recent music video.
Similarities:
  • they have all the stereotypical technical and symbolic conventions like an image of the artist.
  • they both have social media links, appealing to younger tech-savvy generations.
  • they both have their newest singles at first glance on their hompage.
  • they both have a music video on their homepage.
  • they both account for their target audiences in their styles.
